biography
Born into a family of artists in Pasadena, California, Deborah Denker graduated from Art Center College of Design and then began her photography career in Brooklyn’s Dumbo neighborhood in 1983. She remained in New York City for eleven years, living in the Manhattan neighborhoods of Soho and Tribeca before returning to her native state and settling on the central coast of California. In addition to her commercial work she has been combining photography with handmade books, printing monoprints, solarplate etchings, woodblocks and printing on a Vandercook Letterpress. Deborah also teaches photography at Cal Poly State University, and she has been teaching at Brooks Institute, Santa Barbara, CA. She lives in San Luis Obispo with her husband, artist Jeff Jamieson, and their two sons, Tyler and Cooper.
The process of making photographs is now so hands off in the digital age. We have lost the magic of watching the images come to life in the darkroom. To fulfill this void, I have found a great satisfaction in getting my hands messy with ink and feeling the thickness of the paper. Some of my prints originate from photographs while others are inspired by landscapes and nature, with just the simple use of the line.
